Hailakandi: Patherkandi MLA Krishnendu Paul inaugurated the sub-treasury office at Patherkandi in Karimganj district, fulfilling a long-pending demand of the people of the area.

A bill was also passed from the new office by the circle officer-cum-treasury officer of Patherkandi, L. Khiangte.

Karimganj deputy commissioner Pradip Kumar Talukdar said the state government had declared Patherkandi a subdivision of Karimganj district.

He said the government would provide the notification soon.

The government had declared Patherkandi a subdivision before Independence Day in 2015 but no official formalities have yet been completed.

Patherkandi is located 350km from Guwahati and 32km from the district headquarters Karimganj.

Paul inaugurated the office and said his main aim was to develop Patherkandi as a full-fledged subdivision. He spoke of the various development schemes taken during the last year.

He said the state government was trying to set up a medical college in the district.
