Postal agent held

A Silchar head post office agent for savings scheme has been arrested on charges of swindling depositors to the tune of Rs 35 lakh in the past two years. Dhananjoy Malakar has been booked under sections 447, 420 and 471 of the IPC. The senior postmaster of Silchar has ordered a departmental probe into the incident. Malakar had unsuccessfully contested the last municipal elections as an Independent.

2 electrocuted

Two persons were electrocuted in separate incidents in Barak Valley. Ranadhir Chakravarthy, 15, died when he came in contact with hanging overhead wires at Malini Bheel in Silchar. Ashab Uddin, 22, died when he touched a high tension wire at Jamira hamlet in Hailakandi.

Youth camp

The Rajiv Gandhi youth leadership training camp for the Northeast, Prerna, will be held at the Pragjyoti cultural centre in Guwahati from Saturday to Monday.

Nagaon gates

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday inaugurated two gateways on National Highway 37, on either side of the Nagaon town from where a road leads to Srimanta Sankardev?s birthplace, Bordowa. He also unveiled a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and a marketing centre.

Karbi plea

The Karbi Students Association has appealed to the Naga Students Federation and the All Naga Students Association of Manipur to withdraw the blockade on National Highways 39 and 53.

Rebel held

A Muslim United Liberation Front of Assam activist, Moinul Haque alias Laden, was held at Sindurai under Golokganj police station in Dhubri district on Wednesday.

Seminar

The Minorities? Intelligentsia Forum, Assam, is organising a seminar on Pros and Cons of the IM(DT) Act, 1983, at the Al-Ameen Academy complex, Kalgachia in Barpeta, on July 30.

Inauguration

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated a blood bank, a doctors? duty room and paying cabins of the Bhogeswari Phukanoni civil hospital in Nagaon on Wednesday.
