Quake in Assam, Mizoram

Assam and Mizoram were hit by a mild earthquake around 1 pm on Sunday. No casualties were reported in the quake, which had its epicentre on the Indo-Myanmar border. he regional seismological observatory at Shillong said the quake measured 5.8 on the Richter scale.

Absu bandh off

The Absu has postponed the 12-hour Lower Assam bandh on Monday after the Barpeta district administration intervened in the dress code row at Sarupeta BHB College. It set September 25 as the deadline.

Cancelled

Seven trains ( 801/802 passenger train, 709 passenger train, 710 passenger train, 707 passenger train, 708 passenger tra-in, 5665/5666 broadgauge express, 803 and 806 passenger train) have been cancelled due to non-interlocking work at Guwahati railway station between September 20-30.

Man killed

Narayan Roy of Gouri-pur died on the spot when a truck knocked him down at the Beperi Patty More in Dhubri on Saturday night. The driver was arrested and the vehicle seized.

Pranab visit

Defence minister Pranab Mukherjee will meet officers of 3 Corps during his Dimapur visit on Tuesday.

Youth arrested

Diphu police nabbed a Karbi youth who filed a false FIR before Karbi Anglong SP Pankaj Sarma claiming eight members of his family were shot by KRA rebels on Wednesday.

Fake notes

Police in Mamit area of Mizoram seized fake notes totalling Rs 27,500 in denominations of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 from iron-scrap traders. Abdul Khadir of Karimganj has been arrested.

New air links

The Union tourism ministry has suggested the idea of a ?mountain airlines? for the region which will use small aircraft to ferry passengers across the seven states.

Border plea

The CPM in Tripura urged the Centre on Sunday to ensure effective management of the 860-km border with Bangladesh.
