Woman dies after having tea

A woman died after consuming tea in her house in Silchar on Wednesday. Uma Sinha’s husband Nirendra and son Khirgopal also fell ill and have been hospitalised. Their condition is said to be critical. he ingredients of the tea will be sent for forensic testing soon. The tea was prepared by Khirgopal. Police said the tea leaves had probably come in contact with pesticides.

Rebel killed

Police shot dead an “area commander” of the Achik National Volunteers’ Council, Sengjrang Sangma, and rebel Grevil Sangma in an encounter in West Garo Hills district on Wednesday. Six other militants, who were present during the encounter, managed to flee.

MDA programme

The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance has drawn up a 10-point common minimum programme with special emphasis on rural development and controlling influx.

4 abducted

Armed Chakma rebels recently abducted four persons belonging to the Khasi community from Karimganj district. The rebels have demanded Rs 7 lakh as ransom. The kidnapped include two minors.

Governor visit

Assam governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajay Singh arrived in Tezpur on Wednesday. He met senior army officials and discussed the insurgency problem and the relationship between the public and the army.

Gogoi plea

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has urged Union minister for commerce and industry Arun Jaitley to offer incentives to prospective investors to attract them to purchase or take on lease the 14 sick gardens owned by the Assam Tea Corporation Limited.

Teacher dead

Schoolteacher Sukhendu Sekhar Nandi of Baligaon village in Kamalpur subdivision in Tripura died at his residence on Tuesday. Nandi was abducted by NLFT rebels and Bangladeshi dacoits on June 20 and was released on July 7. Nandi had alleged that the rebels had served him poisoned food while in captivity.

Rural schemes

The first meeting of the state-level vigilance and monitoring committee, a high powered committee for rural development, Assam, was held on Wednesday. The committee reviewed the implementation of all the rural development programmes in the state.
