Push for Subansiri hydel unit

Assam Governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajay Singh has asked the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) to complete the Subansiri lower hydroelectric project within the scheduled time of five years. e said the corporation must construct all the six hydroelectric projects pertaining to Subansiri and Siang for development of the region. NHPC general manager Subhash Roy said both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh will get 12 per cent free power from the project.

Accused held

Two prime accused, Naim Gaji and Ajmail Gaji, wanted in connection with the murder of former Ranji Trophy player Izaz Hussain, were arrested by Tezpur police from a dhaba near Koliabhomora bridge under Tezpur police station on Thursday midnight.

Opposition plea

Leader of Opposition Brindaban Goswami has requested deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani to take appropriate steps for enlisting Koch-Rajbongshis in the Scheduled Tribe list to uplift their social status. Goswami said four ordinances had been promulgated during the tenure of H.D. Deve Gowda and P.V. Narasimha Rao for enlisting the community as a Scheduled Tribe.

Dhubri mishap

A 12-year-old boy, Samad Ali, died after being run over by a passenger bus near Targhat under Gauripur police station in Dhubri district. The bus from Gauripur was going to Goalpara.

Rifle recovered

Jorhat police recovered an abandoned, AK-56 rifle from Katonibari tea estate under Mariani police station on Friday. The rusted rifle was detected by labourers. Police said the weapon may have been dropped by militants while fleeing during police operations.

One abducted

One person was abducted by suspected DHD militants from Lumding railway platform on Thursday night. Police are investigating into the identity of the person and the motive behind the abduction.

Ranger awarded

Ranger of Kohora range of Kaziranga National Park, Dharanidhar Boro, has been selected for the India Pacific Asia Travellers’ Association award for 2002. The award is given by the World Wide Fund for Nature India. A communiqué from the Tiger and Wildlife division of the WWF said the award will be conferred on Boro in the last week of September.
