Science awareness project

Assam and Uttaranchal have been selected by the department of science and technology for the launch of its pilot jatha under the Himalayan Vigyan Chetna Jatha in 2004. he programme has been organised to create awareness about the development and achievements of science. A state-level workshop was organised in Guwahati by the Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council, the state organiser of the project. The jatha would visit at least 230 locations in Assam.

Gogoi’s appeal

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has sought Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s intervention in the continuation of Air-India’s international flight to Bangkok from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi international airport in Guwahati. The flight was cancelled from April.

Elephant herd

Elephant specialist Parbati Baruah has arrived in Majuli to help the forest department drive away a herd of wild elephants from the island. The herd has been creating problems for the islanders, damaging crops and houses for several months. The herd which swam across the Brahmaptra to the island several months ago is not willing to return because the river’s water level has risen and the herd has several calves.

Father kills son

ONGC assistant engineer Pawan Sharma attacked his wife and two sons on Friday at his Kalibari residence in Sivasagar district. One of his sons, Baba (13), died on the spot while wife Jaya and younger son Dhan are critical. He has been arrested.

4 rebels held

Meghalaya police on Friday arrested two NSCN (I-M), one NLFT and one Prepak militants. They seized ammunition from them. The militants were arrested during raids at Laban and surrounding areas of the city.

Credit card

The district development committee for Kokrajhar on Thursday asked all departments concerned with the kisan credit card scheme to draw funds from Assam Co-Operative Apex Bank.

Coaching camp

A free vacation coaching camp, jointly organised by the Kokrajhar unit of the All Bodo Students’ Union and the Lafashaiko Social Service Society, was opened on Friday at Kokrajhar Girls’ Higher Secondary School.
