Aizawl: The no-vehicle zone, which was an outcome of a meeting of the coordination committee on traffic management under the Mizoram government headed by home minister R. Lalzirliana, was started on Friday here and will last till Saturday.

It will also be implemented during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

According to the committee, the main shopping area in Aizawl between Zodin Square and Chanmari which has the main markets and biggest shops in Aizawl, will be made vehicle-free.

The distance between Zodin Square and Chanmari is about 2km.

Under the no-vehicle zone programme, no vehicles except emergency services will be allowed on that stretch between 10am and 4pm.

People from different parts of the state come to Aizawl before Christmas for shopping which leads to overcrowded streets.

In order to accommodate the surge in number of shoppers, the no-vehicle zone will be made applicable so that people can walk around safely in the marketplace without vehicles around.

Aizawl traffic police are responsible for the enforcement of the no-vehicle zone programme.
