
Nuruddin Trophy
Guwahati, May 6: A superb bowling performance by Ashok Kumar Saini helped Nagaon turn the tables on Jorhat to clinch a berth in the semi-final of the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy Senior Inter-District Elite Group Cricket Tournament.
Nagaon today overcame Jorhat by virtue of a 36-run first innings lead in their two-day quarter-final encounter at Barsapara Cricket Stadium here.
Put in to bat, Nagaon were bowled out for 186 in 55.5 overs on the first day yesterday and Jorhat resumed at an overnight score of 64 for two and were all out for 150 in 81.3 overs today. Nagaon were 83 for seven in 32 overs in the second innings at the end of the match.
The Jorhat batsmen could not maintain their cool today like they did on the first day and were skittled out easily.
For Jorhat, Md Arif topscored with a patient knock of 61 runs, hitting only two fours, while Utpal Hazarika (23, 3x4), Pargat Bora (18, 2x4) and Ronak Kr. Bucha (16, 2x4) were the other notable scorers. Saini returned with a haul of four for 36 and was supported by Amit Sinha who picked up two for 23. Dhiraj Goswami took one for nine runs. In Nagaon's second innings, Amit Sinha remained unbeaten on 25 (3x4) and Debojit Boruah contributed 22 (2x4). Aniket Bhowmick (12, 2x4) and Bitop Mahanta (11) were the other notable scorers for the side.
Istiak Ali, who hauled six wickets in the first innings yesterday, scalped three for 19 and Prabal Borkataky chipped in with two for 27.
In the third quarter-final tomorrow, Dibrugarh will lock horns with Goalpara at the same stadium.
