
FREEDOM CHALLENGE CUP
Tura, Aug. 16: Selsella Sports Association, also known as The Mangal Pandey Squad, defeated Chipakkore Football Club or The Babasaheb Ambedkar Squad 6-5 via tie-breakers to win the Freedom Challenge Cup, 2016.
Over 5,000 people witnessed the engrossing match at Government Boys' Higher Secondary School Playground, Chandmari, last evening.
Both the teams displayed exemplary football skills on the ground. Suspense, drama and story unfolded during the match with both teams equally charged up. It was difficult for anybody to predict who will win the title as both teams displayed their gusto.
In the first half, both the teams failed to score.
In the second half, Mangal Pandey Squad scored their first goal in the 31st minute via Arthius Marak to pose a challenge to Babasaheb Ambedkar Squad.
In the 52nd minute, Dalmathius Marak of Babasaheb Ambedkar scored the equaliser.
In the penalty shootout, Mangal Pandey Squad scored five goals while Babasaheb Ambedkar Squad scored four.
Meghalaya health minister A.L. Hek gave away the trophy and the cash prize of Rs 50,000 to the winners and Rs 25,000 to the runners-up. Altogether 16 teams took part in the tournament.
Dorik Marak of Selsella Sports Association won the Best Forward Player award, Dipyush Momin of Boca Juniors was Best Defender, Chinqu Sangma of Selsella was named Best Midfielder, Jaksram Marak of Chipakkore Sports Club was Best Goalkeeper and Terin Marak of Chipakkore bagged the Player of the Tournament award. The highest scorer of the tournament was Dalmathius Marak ofBabasaheb Ambedkar Squad with eight goals.
