Nagaon, Sept. 2: Kheroni were crowned champions of 11 All-Karbi Anglong Inter-sub Association women’s football tournament, organised by Greater Diphu Sports Association, defeating defending champions Phuloni 1-0 in the final match at Karbi Anglong Sports Association at Diphu playground today.

In the fourth minute of the match, Kheroni striker Nilima Englengpi missed a beautiful opportunity as her powerful shot rebounded off the goalpost. Her second attempt brought the winning goal for Kheroni in the 13th minute.

Kheroni defeated Dokmoka 7-0 in their quarter-final match on August 27. They entered the final overpowering Langhing 1-0 on Tuesday.

Defending champions Phuloni defeated Hamren by 5-0 goals in the quarter-finals and Dengaon in the semi-final on Saturday and Tuesday respectively. More than 5,000 soccer lovers gathered today to enjoy the final match.

Altogether 11 teams participated in the meet. Hosts Greater Diphu Sports Association left the tournament in first round.

Sub-junior football

Bijni and Gossaigaon stormed into the semifinals of the 34th Sati Mohan Dev Trophy Inter-District Sub-Junior (U-16) Football Championship which got under way in Kokrajhar.

In the quarter-final matches today, Bijni defeated hosts Kokrajhar 2-1 while Gossaigaon were overpowered by Goalpara 3-1.
