Shillong, Sept. 11: Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) “chairman” Champion R. Sangma’s defence counsel is considering moving a fresh bail application after a local court rejected a similar application last week.

“We are considering a fresh bail application in the next few days,” Champion’s counsel Sujit Dey said.

While rejecting a bail application, a local court on Friday observed that Champion was likely to commit offences if bail was granted to him.

The court of I. Rymbui, first class judicial magistrate, rejected Champion’s bail plea and stated that the offences chargesheeted against the accused were “very serious in nature”.

The public prosecutor in the case had also opposed the bail application by stating that the accused is the “chairman” of a banned organisation, and his release could pose a threat to the security of the state.

There are around 10 cases filed against Champion and the chargesheet filed against him has been registered at Pynursla police station in East Khasi Hills.

Champion has been booked under Sections 120/120A/120B/121 of IPC to be read with Sections 16 and 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The court had also remanded the former Meghalaya deputy superintendent of police to another 14 days’ judicial custody.
