Jorhat, April 23: Jorhatians can look forward to an evening of fusion music as Ambarish Das croons to the strains of the sitar and saxophone, beats of the tabla and notes of the keyboard of the Navarasa group of Calcutta.

Basant Melody, a musical programme, will be organised by Rotary Club of Jorhat at the district library on April 30 in aid of various humanitarian causes, including polio eradication.

Brijesh Poddar, immediate past president, Rotary Club of Jorhat, said the club was committed to different causes and the proceeds of the tickets would be given to projects which work for the uplift of the needy and help eradicate diseases, besides being used for social service.

“We are already donors to Dagaon Anath Ashram and the Prerona Spastic Society here. Besides, we have erected a number of public waiting sheds and urinals. We also aid the intensive care unit at the Christian Medical Centre here by buying oxygen cylinders and other equipment,” he said.

The Rotary Club, in partnership with the Christian Medical Centre at Borbhetta, had set up the ICU in 2006 at a time when there were no other facilities in any hospital here to treat emergency cases.

“The ICU has taken in and treated more than 1,200 patients till date and has saved many lives. With tickets ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 300, we expect that profits can be ploughed back into buying some equipment for the ICU,” Poddar said.

“Another area the Rotary Club is stressing is eradication of polio from this world through awareness camps in different places,” he said.

The former president said the Navarasa group, Calcutta, comprises renowned sitarist Partha Bose, a disciple of Pandit Manoj Shankar, Michael Banerjee on the saxophone, Pulak Sarkar on the keyboard, Subrata Manna on the tabla and vocalist Ambarish Das.

“Music lovers, especially classical music aficionados, will especially enjoy the performance as Partha Bose and the others have earlier given scintillating shows in Calcutta and other places,” he said.
