Jorhat, April 20: Four persons died in a head-on collision between a night super bus and an ambulance at Khwang Chariali on NH 37 in the wee hours today.
The area falls under Khwang police station in Dibrugarh district.
Police sources said the Network Travels bus, bearing registration number AR-01E-5446, was travelling from Guwahati to Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh via Tinsukia when it collided with the ambulance, which belonged to a tea garden and was returning from Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, after admitting Ganga Tanti of Doomar Dolong Tea Estate. The estate is close to Moran town in Dibrugarh district.
Tanti had fallen ill late last night and was taken to AMCH for treatment.
The four victims — Krishna Tanti, 62, Sanjay Tanti, 35, the ambulance’s driver, Mansingh Kutri, 40, and Gauranga Tanti, 30 — were workers of the same tea garden who had accompanied Tanti in the ambulance. While three of them died instantly, Gauranga, who was seriously injured, died on way to hospital.
Around 10 passengers of the bus also received minor injuries in the accident as it skidded off the road and drove into a paddy field after the collision. All the injured have been admitted to the AMCH and are stated to be out of danger.
