Guwahati, Feb. 19: Assam BJP today refused to give credit to the Tarun Gogoi government for successfully hosting the 12th South Asian Games in the city recently.

"How can the Gogoi government claim credit when the entire event was managed and sponsored by the Centre? It was unfortunate that the Gogoi government tried to play politics with the SAG. The ruling Congress rather insulted Prime Minister Narendra Modi by putting up large hoardings in the city ridiculing him at a time when foreign participants were here," senior BJP leader Ramen Deka said.

Gogoi had yesterday taken credit for the success of the 12th South Asian Games and demanded that the Centre sanction Rs 1,000 crore to build new stadia in over 200 blocks in the state.

According to Gogoi, majority of works and creation of infrastructure for the Games were done by his government. Only a few officials from the Centre came to Assam to help the state in organising the Games. He claimed that 80 per cent credit for the successful SAG goes to his government.

On Wednesday, Modi had described the SAG as the best-ever organised Games.

Deka, an MP from Mangaldoi in lower Assam, told reporters here this afternoon that the last 15 years of the Gogoi government was a saga of corruption, underdevelopment and unbridled loot by ministers and party workers.

He said many matric examinees from his constituency were travelling by boats to their examination centres since there were no roads and bridges.

"If examinees have to come by boats, what is the use of the Gogoi government's scheme of distributing cycles?" he asked.

"If we highlight such issues, Gogoi is quick enough to blame the Centre by citing funds cut to the state. How can the Centre continue to allocate funds when the state government has not submitted utilisation certificates for the money spent?" Deka further asked.

Ridiculing the Congress for its claim that the party is pro-farmer, Deka said the Gogoi government had so far converted 1 lakh bigha of agricultural land in the state for industrial use. But no major industry has so far been set up on such land, raising doubts about a land scam, Deka said.

Deka also hit back at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's jibe at the BJP on the JNU row, accusing the latter of taking sides with the "anti-India" forces.
