Guwahati, Nov. 11: Durlav Gogoi, who had single-handedly developed a digital bilingual dictionary, today made the app version of the dictionary available to people.

Now, a person using smartphone run with Android or iOS operating system can download the app, Aadarxa Bilingual Dictionary, to search for Assamese and English words. "This bilingual app contains over 1.20 lakh words. That is, one can search for both Assamese words and English words," Gogoi told The Telegraph.

The app was released at the 12th North East Book Fair today.

In 2012, Gogoi had developed a digital Assamese dictionary, Xohoj Xandhan Axomiya Abhidhan, or Easy Searching Assamese Dictionary. A year later, he developed it into the Aadaxa Bilingual Dictionary.

Gogoi said the app was developed at a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh with technical help from Valentina Padydora, a software expert from Romania.

"The app is not free. Google will charge Rs 100 for one installation. If people format their device, they will be able to get it installed again without charge. Updates can be downloaded free," he said.

The app also runs offline, which means once downloaded, no Internet connection will be required to open it.

"However, to access thousands of pictures that the app contains, the user must be online. It has been made so because the huge amount of images needs a large space," Gogoi said. To search for Assamese words, an Assamese keypad has been incorporated with the app. "When one selects the Assamese option, the Assamese keypad will be shown," he added.
