INTER-SCHOOL CRICKET
Hailakandi, Jan. 5: Babyland School emerged champions, drubbing Saraswati Vidyaniketan by 10 wickets in the Ratna Sarma Inter-School Cricket Championship of Karimganj District Sports Association (KDSA) yesterday.
Put in to bat, Vidyaniketan were bundled out for 94 runs in 20 overs in the final held at Government High School in Karimganj. The extras were the 'highest scorer' for Vidyaniketan, while Hritendu Das and Ankit Paul chipped in with 22 and 21 respectively. Debajyoti Paul of Babyland picked up three wickets for 21 runs and Barnava Das and Samrat Paul shared two each.
In reply, Babyland reached 95 runs without losing any wicket in 12.3 overs. Opener Sabir Karim scored 63 runs, hitting eight fours and a six while Nihal Kanti Das contributed 20 runs.
The trophies were given away by DSA secretary Nikhil Ranjan Mazumdar and guests Biswajit Ghosh, Ashis Purkayastha and Dipankar Aditya, among others.
Hockey: Hosts Assam defeated Gujarat 4-2 in their first match of the sixth National Sub-Junior Hockey Championship at Nurul Amin Stadium in Nagaon today.
Anura Kujur scored two goals for the home team in the 44th and 54th minutes. Boby Karmakar and Mamoni Das scored one each for the Assam in the 45th and 51st minutes respectively.
In another match, Cityzen Hockey defeated Mumbai School Association 1-0. Mamoni Pariya scored the lone goal for Cityzen in the 37th minute.
Altogether 14 teams are participating in the meet. Four teams - Goa, Bhopal, Himachal Pradesh and Kerela -could not turn up.
