Tezpur, June 15: Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd suspended three employees today following yesterday’s electrocution of casual worker Arjun Gayan, 23, while working on a live 11kV power line on the company’s premises near Padum Pukhuri here.

Tezpur circle officer Saranga Pani Sarmah said a criminal case had been registered and junior engineer Shimanta Sarma, switchboard operator Manash Das and Dhiren Deka suspended. Sources said Gayan was forced to work on the live line as officials refused to cut power.

Some employees also told the circle officer that some non-technical employees and even a peon were engaged in repairing electrical lines at times though they were not trained to do so.

Agitated family members of Gayan and a section of APDCL employees cremated his body this afternoon only after getting a written assurance from the company’s deputy general manager, Jatindra Chandra Hazarika, that action would be initiated against those responsible for his death and that compensation would be paid to the family within 10 days.
