A curiously low-stakes blockbuster, in effect a filmed Wikipedia page

This was never about you,” someone says to Han Solo, which is odd since the movie is called Solo. I don’t want to make this about me, but there are a lot of questions that, in the 41 years since I saw the first Star Wars movie — fine! the fourth one; A New Hope; jeez! — it has never occurred to me to ask. Where did Han Solo get his last name? How did he and Chewbacca meet? What was the winning hand in the game of Sabacc that gave him possession of the Millennium Falcon? How exactly did he make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs?

Mini Chewie shares his solo experience with t2

You know, when I made plans with my celebrity friend Little Chewie (check out his Instagram account @this_is_little_chewie if you don’t believe me) to go watch Big Chewie in action on Friday morning, I was very, very apprehensive. All the behind-the-scenes news about people leaving and reshoots left me worried about Big Chewie and his Corellian friend Han Solo’s fate on the big screen. But while it will never come close to being the best Star Wars film ever, or even like third, or fourth best, Solo: A Star Wars Story wasn’t all that bad, and some of it was actually fun.

Plays the patriotism card and fails to pack a punch

The Pokhran tests of 1998 — a landmark achievement in India’s quest to become a nuclear superpower — was a strategic mission, the brainchild of the best minds in the country. Carried out with clockwork precision and cooperation from the country’s premier agencies, Pokhran lurks in the world’s consciousness as one of the best executed covert operations in history. It hoodwinked America and left Pakistan wringing its hands.

No risk of seriously hurt feelings or biting satire

The four members in the titular book club of Book Club are four women who have been meeting once a month to drink wine and talk about a book. They started in the ’70s with Erica Jong’s Fear of Flying and have just turned their attention to E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey. There’s a lot of literary and social history in the span between those two bestsellers, which take their heroines from “zipless” adultery to handcuffed monogamy, from elusive liberation to consensual bondage.

Burning the midnight oil

The film Goodnight City, directed by Kamaleswar Mukherjee, scores a couple of firsts. Leading lady Rituparna Sengupta worked with the Chander Pahar director for the first time. And she played a psychiatrist, also for the first time. Another first? Rituparna’s look test, which ran a few hours late!
