Stranger Things 4 to Enola Holmes 2: Top shows and movies on Netflix in 2022

Topping off its year-end releases with Daniel Craig-starrer Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Lily Collins-starrer Emily in Paris Season 3, Netflix is all set to bid farewell to the year 2022, which witnessed a string of romcoms, period dramas, mystery thriller and action adventures being churned out by the streamer.
2022 was a successful year for Netflix
A whopping six out of the 10 most searched shows of the year were from Netflix, prompting the streamer to bag more spots in the Nielsen Top 10 list than all other streamers combined.
The year 2022 saw the premiere of five of Netflix’s 10 most popular English language series of all time — Stranger Things 4, Wednesday, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Bridgerton S2 and Inventing Anna.
Three of Netflix’s 10 most popular English language films of all time — The Adam Project, The Gray Man and Purple Hearts — premiered this year. The Sea Beast, which also premiered in 2022, became the streaming giant’s most successful animated kids’ film, while The Tinder Swindler went on to become the most successful Netflix documentary feature of all time.
Non-English content has also gained a wide audience on Netflix. Seven films released this year made it to the streamer’s 10 most popular non-English films list of all time. These films are Troll (Norway), All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), Black Crab (Sweden), Through My Window (Spain), The Takedown (France), Loving Adults (Denmark) and My Name is Vendetta (Italy).
Return of the favourites
Apart from the new shows and films, recurring shows also found their audience this year on Netflix. Shows like The Crown S5, Stranger Things 4, Elite S6, Bridgerton S2, The Umbrella Academy S3, Young Royals S2 and Ozark S4 met with resounding success. Even anticipated sequels like Enola Holmes 2, Lost Bullet 2 and 365 Days sequels captivated the audience, sometimes gaining more viewership than the previous season.
The K-wave
A growing number of Netflix subscribers are being bitten by the K-bug. Nearly 60 per cent of Netflix consumers watched a Korean title this year. Six of the 10 most searched K-dramas in Korea were on Netflix. These include Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Narco Saints, All of Us Are Dead, Twenty Five Twenty One, Business Proposal and Our Blues.
Home to chartbusters
Many memorable songs from the yesteryears climbed the charts in 2022 thanks to the Netflix effect. Running Up That Hill, which featured in Stranger Things Season 4, was among the trending songs of the year on TikTok. The hit horror comedy Wednesday churned out two hit songs — Goo Goo Muck by The Cramps and Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga. The hashtag #WednesdayAddams has been used over 19 billion times on TikTok with Lady Gaga herself joining the trend.
