Back from America for his Christmas holidays, The Bong Connection actor has slipped into the role of an NRI for Sudeshna Roy-Abhijit Guha’s Cross Connection 2. After a making-out scene with Tanusree in a Jhowtala house, Shayan Munshi settles down for an adda with t2

Are you comfortable doing intimate scenes?

You make it sound like I am a major porn star or something! (Laughs out loud) I mean if it’s a requirement, it needs to be done. I am not someone who goes out of my way to offer an intimate scene with someone!

Okay! So you come here, do a film and then you disappear…

(Smiles) Pretty much the story of my life.

Works fine for you?

Totally. I am happy to come, work with the people I want to work with, enjoy working with them, especially Sudeshnadi and Ranada (Abhijit). We’ve always wanted to work together, hasn’t happened before. But there’s always a perfect time for everything and this is it. I was spending time in America. I am training with Barrow Group, a theatre group. See, I cannot predict what is in store in future but I am trying to give it a good run. So far it’s looking promising, there’s been a lot of inspiring moments over the past three years in America. I have a manager there and I have been getting a lot of job options.

What do you play in Cross Connection 2?

Once again, I don’t know why it’s following me around, I am an NRI. A Bong who lives in Canada (in both Bong Connection and Banshiwala, Shayan had played an NRI). My character comes back to set up a company in Calcutta. Obviously the responsibilities, stress levels… there’s a lot of pressure and at home there’s heavy pressure as his wife wants to have a child. So, Vicky is trying to find a way to balance his personal life and professional life.

Why don’t you settle down in Calcutta?

That’s a little bit of a tricky question. I want to do a lot of things in my life. I am investing a lot in my personal growth, not only as an actor but also as an individual and also in regard to the other things that I do on a daily basis. And so far I am getting that opportunity in America. I am picking up the craft of acting and I’m also training in Aikido, a kind of martial art. I have been training very long in New York and I have the best infrastructure there. And it’s inspiring for me to be in that country at this moment in my life because it makes me want to be better. Here I find that things just happen and are not given priority. That kind of diffuses my inspiration a little. And I am driven by my inspiration.

Is it also because of what happened in the past (being a witness in the Jessica Lall murder case) that you are better off out of the country?

Not necessarily. Doesn’t matter where I am doing what I am doing, as long as I am doing what I want to do.

Do you keep in touch with the directors you’ve worked with?

I am in touch with Tony (Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury), Avik (Mukhopadhyay, who directed him in Ekti Tarar Khonje) and Madhuja (Mukherjee, scriptwriter of that film). But it’s like keeping tabs on what we are up to. We are all living parallel lives. Anjanda (Dutt) is someone I really love and respect and if I meet him I will give him a hug. The love’s never lost. I’m always there for them if they ever need me.

Are you happy with the way things have shaped up in your life?

Well, it’s still shaping up. I’m happy on my journey. It is moving towards hopefully a place where things will grow more and more.

What’s your relationship status?

Hmm… that’s a very private question. But there is someone in my life and she means a lot to me.
