The city got its first gourmet festival recently as Democratik, in association with t2, presented Kolkata Gourmet Festival (September 13-15) at the Penetti Banquets in Mani Square. “This is a fair that aims to bring together the big names in the food and beverage industry in Calcutta under one roof, and introduce the people to a proper gourmet experience in the city,” said Sudeshna Mukhopadhyay, a member of Democratik.
Their enthusiasm was welcomed by some of the city’s top chefs and food connoisseurs. “Calcuttans need to be introduced to good food on a bigger scale, this festival will hopefully do that,” said Sharad Dewan, area director, food and beverage, The Park Calcutta.

“The gourmet experience used to be reserved for a fortunate few some years back in the city but with time, this niche market has been opened to the masses,” said food critic Rajen Bali.
On the platter were delicacies by Swissotel, HHI, Flurys, Chhote Nawab, Tamarind, KK’s Fusion, Wow! Momo, Pabrai’s Fresh & Naturelle Ice Cream. Culinary workshops and panel discussions were held where aspiring chefs picked up tips from the likes of Dewan and ITC Sonar’s executive chef Mayank Kulshreshtha. Cultural programmes, including magic shows and gigs, were also on the menu.
