A 14-year-old girl allegedly tried to commit suicide by jumping off the Gol Ghar under Gandhi Maidan police station on Thursday morning.
The teenager from Bigrapur near Mithapur had taken the Class X board examination from a government school in Naubatpur but was unsuccessful.
Police suspected that the teenager tried to kill herself because of failure in the board examination.
“She is admitted to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) and her condition is stable. We are yet to record her statement. We have contacted her parents, who said she came to Patna a few days ago and was staying with one of her relatives in the Chiriyatand area. Her parents said the girl had failed in the examination,” an officer at the Gandhi Maidan police station said.
The Gol Ghar, a heritage building, is a 29m structure with 141 stairs.
Sources in the police said the girl might not have jumped from the top of the structure.
“The building is huge and a fall from its top would be fatal. She must have jumped from some portion of the staircase. She suffered injuries to her back, shoulders and head,” the officer said.
“Sources in her family said she used to remain depressed ever since failing in the examination. Some passers by saw her falling from the heritage building and rushed her to the PMCH,” another police officer said.
In 2007, two persons had committed suicide by jumping off the Gol Ghar.
