Rising rivers flood 8 villages

Patna, July 2 (PTI): The flood threat in Bihar today aggravated with some major rivers still rising trend as flash floods caused by heavy discharge of water in Balmikinagar Barrage inundated eight villages in West Champaran district.

Bagaha sub-divisional officer Rajiv Kumar said discharge of 3.37 lakh cusecs of water in Balmikinagar barrage triggered a rise in the water level of Burhi Gandak, inundating eight villages under Chyrahi and Sisai panchayats in Madhubani block.

The authorities rescued hundreds of villagers from the affected villages and also arranged shelter for them, he pointed out.

According to a bulletin issued by the Central Water Commission, all major rivers in the state have been rising and most of these were flowing above the red mark at several places along their course.

The water-level of Gandak has been 8cm above the danger mark at Kadda.

Even Bagmati and Kosi rivers have been flowing 30cm and 36cm above the danger mark at Benibad and Basua, respectively, the bulletin added.

However, rivers like Kamalabalan and Mahananda are still flowing below the danger line.

Sources in the state disaster management department said that elaborate arrangements have been made for rescue and relief operations in case of serious flood in the state.
