Patna, April 22: Body of a 27-year-old youth, who was preparing for banking examinations, was found hanging in his rented room today morning.
The reason behind the death has not been ascertained yet but the family of the deceased is alleging murder.
Saytendra Kumar, a physically challenged youth, was living in a room of a private home at Vishnu Puri under Gardanibagh police station along with his six-year-old nephew Yashwant.
The two had been living in the house for over six months, the police said.
Today morning, Yashwant woke up to find Satyendra hanging from the ceiling fan. He raised an alarm and police were immediately called in. The policemen brought down the body and sent it for post-mortem.
A resident of Nawadih under the Hilsa police station area of Nalanda district, Satyendra was said to be very studious.
“He was physically challenged and used to walk with crutches. Today morning, at around 9am, Yashwant woke up from his sleep and saw him hanging from the fan,” a police officer at Gardanibagh police station said.
Yashwant told the police Saytendra had a heated argument last evening with some people of the same area for some reason.
“His statement has been taken down. Last evening, Yashwant had seen Saytendra having an argument with some people whom he did not recognise. The men beat up Saytendra after which he became very sad. The deceased did not speak a word after the incident and some time later, the two went off to sleep,” the police said.
The cause of the youth’s death has puzzled the investigators. “The boy is physically challenged and cannot walk without the help of crutches. The ceiling fan is at the height of at least 10 feet from the floor. Moreover, there are no tables or furniture in the room on which he might have climbed in order to hang himself. The beds are also very low. These give rise to the suspicion that is something wrong,” a neighbour said.
The police said the matter will be investigated from all angles.
“Both the deceased and his nephew were in the same room. If the boy was murdered, how is it possible that the nephew did not come to know about the same? There would be some noise if a murder attempt is made,” a Gardanibagh officer said.
Sachivalaya ASP Satyaveer Singh, who visited the spot said the post-mortem report may throw some light on the cause of death.
“The body has been sent for a post-mortem and things will become clearer after the report is out. The police will investigate the case from all possible angles. The police will talk to the nephew of the boy and get more details about the physical appearance of the people who allegedly beat him up,” the officer said.
