National Institute of Technology (NIT), Patna’s bid to improve campus placements is showing results. Around 110 students got jobs in the past month.
Gyan Prakash, a final-year mechanical engineering student whom IBM hired, said: “With recruitment having begun on time, the figure will go up. More firms would visit in the coming months.”
Despite the economic slowdown, major recruiters are still from the IT sector. The IBM recruited 69 students on September 3 and 4. Another IT company, Capgemini, one of the largest outsourcing firms, recruited 27 students from the campus on September 4 and 5.
NIT-Patna placement in-charge G.K. Chaudhary said: “From the beginning of the academic session, the institute took various initiatives to invite companies for campus recruitment. Thus, the companies have started visiting the institute much earlier than in previous years.”
In the beginning of August, Mu Sigma, an analytics service provider company, visited the campus and hired six students. Later, Arizone Technologies, another IT solution firm, recruited nine students. The results of campus selection interview and written test by Mahindra & Mahindra Limited and Maruti Suzuki India Limited, respectively, are still awaited.
Even the Indian Navy carried out written tests and interview on September 6 and 7 and recruited 15 students in the first phase. They have to clear SSB (service selection board) test before they are appointed.
The IBM is offering hired students Rs 3.4 lakh per annum and Capgemini Rs 2.6 lakh for a six-month training period before they are absorbed at a higher pay. Mu Sigma’s annual package is Rs 6 lakh per annum and Arizone Technologies’ Rs 4.75 lakh per annum.
Last year, many public sector units skipped the institute as Madras High Court had put a stay on campus recruitment. Sources said around 65 per cent students were hired from the campus last year.
This year, the institute has invited Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Gas Authority of India Limited, Indian Oil, Coal India Limited and National Thermal Power Corporation among others.
