Patna, Jan. 12: Relatives of a young woman today ransacked the office of a private nursing home in the city on getting information that she was dead. She had given birth to a child a few days ago, who died hours after birth.

Gudia Devi (25) had given birth at the Kankerbagh clinic of Dr Sarika Roy on Thursday. Gudia was under Dr Roy’s supervision ever since she conceived. Her family members alleged Gudia’s condition deteriorated after delivery and she had to be operated upon twice. By then, her newborn had died at the clinic.

Gudia, married to Calcutta-based businessman Vikas Kumar Singh, was staying at her parents’ home in Danapur. Her brother-in-law Krishna Kumar said she was shifted fr-om the Kankerbagh clinic to Ruban hospital on SP Verma Road on Friday where she was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).

The family was informed of her death this morning. The nursing home authorities said her relatives broke the window panes and furniture on its ground floor office between 10am and 12 noon. Kumar said: “The doctors attending to her asked for more blood around 1am on Friday. We had earlier arranged for more than 30 units of blood.”

The family claimed not only did they pay at least Rs 1.5 lakh at the Kankerbagh clinic, the private hospital management also presented a bill of Rs 1.5 lakh for Gudia’s treatment. Sources said Ruban hospital under the jurisdiction of Gandhi Maidan police station was the establishment of a relative of Dr Roy.

Alleging that Gudia was kept in the ICU by the authorities even after her death to mint money, Kumar said: “The hospital authorities did not allow us to see Gudia despite repeated requests on Friday night. They informed us about her death this morning.”

Dr Sarika could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. Her husband, Dr Himanshu, was also unavailable for comments.

As soon as the news of Gudia’s death, her relatives from the Mukarakpur area near Danapur reached the nursing home and ransacked the office. “They broke the furniture and glasses in the office,” said an employee of the nursing home.

Patna City superintendent of police Jayant Kant, who visited the nursing home said a complaint had been lodged against the authorities based on the statement of Gudia’s relatives. “I assured the family of fast action in case the allegations against the nursing home is found to be true,” said Kant.

Station house officer, Gandhi Maidan police station, Raj Bindu Prasad said the nursing home authorities have also lodged counter FIRs against the family for vandalism.
