Mumbai robbery arrest

PANCHLA: The suspected mastermind of a recent bank dacoity in Navi Mumbai's Juinagar was arrested from Panchla in Howrah on Monday. A team of officers from the Mumbai crime branch arrested Abdul Siraj Seikh in a joint raid with Howrah police after tracking his cellphone location. Cash and jewellery worth around Rs 3 crore had been stolen from 30 of the bank's 225 lockers. A tunnel was dug from a store near the bank to the locker to carry out the crime.

Website crash

SALT LAKE: The Bidhannagar Fair website (www.bidhannagarmela.org) crashed on Monday afternoon, minutes after its launch. The fair begins at Central Park on December 21. The 472 stalls and pavilions at the fair can only be booked online this year. The portal managed by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation could not handle the traffic, experts said. The site was not functioning till late on Monday.

Bus catches fire

MG ROAD: A private bus caught fire near Chhabighar on MG Road on Monday evening. Fire officers, along with a police team, doused the flames. No one was injured or trapped, police said. The bus on route 239B that plies between Salt Lake and Babughat was seized by officers of Muchipara police station. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the police said.

Balcony collapse

• JORABAGAN: A portion of a first-floor balcony of a three storey building collapsed on Monday around 6.30pm. Police said no one was injured. Residents of the building at 60, Pathuriaghata Street were rescued, police said.

Drug haul

WATGUNGE: Police arrested a man in the Circular Garden Reach Road area on Sunday with 1.4kg of charas worth Rs 2 lakh. Saddam Hossain Khan, 25, is a resident of MM Ali Road in Ekbalopore, the police said. He has been booked under various sections of the narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances act.

Suicide

SONARPUR: A Class XI student was found hanging in his home at Sardarpara in the Sonarpur police station area on Sunday. Rahul Sardar, 17, had locked himself in his room on Sunday night and didn't respond to repeated knocks, police said. Family members broke down the door to his room and found him hanging. Cops suspect Rahul committed suicide over a failed relationship.

Factory blaze

ANANDAPUR: A fire broke out at a shoe factory in West Chowbhaga, Anandapur, around 11.25am on Monday. Police said two fire engines doused the flames by noon. No one was trapped or injured in the fire, the police said.
