Mamata Banerjee after meeting the Prime Minister on Monday
March 10: Mamata Banerjee remained cooped up in her nephew Abhishek Banerjee's residence in Delhi for the better part of today but ensured that Mukul Roy was pushed to the last bench of the Rajya Sabha and a process of disciplinary action was started against him.
'The party's disciplinary committee has asked me to prepare a dossier of all the statements Mukul Roy has made in the media. He has been making statements that are completely against the party view,' party spokesperson Derek O'Brien said.
O'Brien said that from tomorrow, the sitting arrangement of Trinamul MPs would be changed and Roy, who has been removed as party all-India general secretary and stripped of organisational responsibilities, would sit in the last (seventh) row of the Rajya Sabha.
Roy, who used to sit in the front row as the leader of Trinamul in the Rajya Sabha, was recently removed from the post and shifted to the third row. Jailed MP Kunal Ghosh's assigned seat is in the seventh row.
Roy sought to poke fun at the party's move to push him to the back row. 'They cannot throw me out of Parliament,' he said. Asked about the possible disciplinary action against him, he said: 'I cannot be thrown out of the minds of the people.'
Trinamul sources said the reason behind Mamata's ire was the alleged 'leak' of the CBI letter to the party, asking it about its earnings from paintings.
'The letter must have come to Mukul Roy with a copy to Subrata Bakshi. So it is clear who leaked the information to the media,' a Trinamul leader said. Roy used to be the all-India general secretary of Trinamul along with Bakshi.
Roy denied having leaked the letter, pointing out that it was dated March 5 while he was removed from the national general secretary's post on February 28.
The Trinamul sources said Mamata no longer wanted Roy in the party and so had ordered the preparation of the dossier against him. 'The dossier against Mukul would be ready in a week and put before the disciplinary committee,' a Trinamul MP said.
The party has started collecting newspaper clippings of some of Roy's recent statements against Mamata and the leadership.
A Trinamul MP said tonight from Delhi that the party could first serve a showcause notice on Roy.
Asked if the leadership was contemplating disciplinary action against Roy, Trinamul secretary-general Partha Chatterjee ducked the question. 'The party is closely watching every move and every action and will take a call at the right time,' he said.
Pressed further to know about the party's stand on Roy in the light of his statements against the chief minister, Chatterjee, the head the party's disciplinary committee, said: 'If a party soldier sits at home and declares war, even then he will not be able to cause any damage to the party. The people are watching everything.'
Trinamul sources close to Roy said he had expressed his desire to meet expelled CPM leader Abdur Rezzak Mollah next week.
Unlike yesterday, Mamata today remained indoors for the most part of the day. In the afternoon, power, coal and mines minister Piyush Goyal came to meet her. Trinamul leaders remained tightlipped about the agenda of the meeting, which came on a day the mines and minerals bill was debated in the Rajya Sabha.
Trinamul sources said Goyal could be trying to secure Trinamul's support for the passage of the bill. But Trinamul has already joined hands with the larger Opposition to force the bill to be sent to the select committee.
'Goyal may have tried to win over Trinamul's support for the bill in the Rajya Sabha. Trinamul has no problem with the mines and minerals bill but it might be difficult for us to break away from the larger Opposition unity,' a Trinamul MP said.
After the 20-minute meeting with Mamata, Goyal was seen chatting with O'Brien, Trinamul's new leader in the Rajya Sabha, and Abhishek.
Mamata, sources close to her said, looked upset about something and chose to remain indoors almost all through the day. She was learnt to have cut short her Delhi visit by a day and was likely to leave for Calcutta on Wednesday afternoon.
'We have tickets booked for tomorrow and also the day after. But she looks upset and is likely to leave tomorrow,' a close aide of Mamata said.
In the evening, the chief minister paid a courtesy visit to President Pranab Mukherjee and had dinner with him.
