Shyamal Das, known as Hubba Shyamal in the underworld, was arrested in front of a hotel in Dankuni on Sunday afternoon.
Police said there were 52 cases, including 26 murder cases, pending against him. He had been on the run since the high court granted him bail three years ago.
The officers who chased and caught 40-year-old Shyamal when he tried to run away found a revolver and nine rounds of bullets on him.
Kankar Prasad Barui, the sub-divisional police officer of Dankuni, said they had received a tip-off that Shyamal would visit the hotel to meet an associate. “He got off a vehicle on Delhi Road, a few metres from the hotel, and started walking. Seeing us, he tried to run away but four policemen chased and caught him,” added the cop.
According to the police, Shyamal committed two crimes in the recent past. “He hijacked a truck carrying raw materials for a cotton mill. He was also involved in rioting over the election of a local club’s governing body,” said an officer of Dankuni police station.
Shyamal was first arrested in 2005 at City Centre in Salt Lake, where he had gone to watch a film.
