Malda, Dec. 15: Two students were killed after they were hit by a truck on NH34 near Jadupur this afternoon.
Sariful Sheikh, 14, and Musiful Sheikh, 13, were going to Jadupur High Madarsa on bicycles when the vehicle hit them from the rear. After the accident, the local people set up a blockade on the highway from 3pm. It was lifted around 6pm after police informed the protesters that the driver of the truck had been apprehended.
Malda: Rekha Mondal, 22, killed herself and her 18-month-old daughter by pouring kerosene and setting themselves on fire in Jhimuli village in Old Malda on Tuesday. Rekha’s husband Perua Mondol and his brother Sanjib have been arrested.
Jalpaiguri: Two youths were arrested on Tuesday from Belakoba and and fake notes were seized from them. The duo had gone to a petrol pump in Belakoba under Rajganj block when the workers at the pump suspected the notes to be fake and informed police who recovered 42 notes with a face value of Rs 500 each.
Siliguri: The Patna frontier of the Sashastra Seema Bal will celebrate its 46th raising day at the Ranidanga parade grounds, under the 22nd battalion of the force, on Thursday. During the celebration, there will be a display of weapons, a dog show and awareness drive on different projects.
Siliguri: The 5th Bangla Gan Utsav will begin at Pradhannagar Margaret (Sister Nivedita) English School’s auditorium from Wednesday. Several singers from Calcutta, including Sraboni Sen, Pratik Choudhury and folk artistes from different parts of the state, will participate in the event that will end on December 20.
