Kurseong, July 8: To strengthen its demand for a Hill university, the All Gorkha Students? Union (Agsu) has formed a new body for its Kurseong branch, at a meeting yesterday.

?The committee formed earlier had become defunct and we had temporarily suspended the body. But now that a new body has been formed, our demand can be pursued more actively,? Roshan Giri, president of Agsu, told The Telegraph today.

Emphasising the need for a Hill university, Giri said: ?An engineering and a medical college are absolutely necessary in the Hills. The courses taught in North Bengal University are outdated and do not provide any scope for students to understand and nurture their culture. The Darjeeling Polytechnique in Kurseong can be upgraded to the level of a full-fledged engineering college. We also demand that a Hill university be formed with campuses in Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Mirik.?

Agsu also plans to conduct seminars to discuss the issue.

The new committee has Dipen Sewa as president, Sonam Lama as vice-president and Sanjay Lama as secretary. Ten executive members were also selected at the meeting for active participation in pressing the demand.
