Siliguri, Nov. 28: Twelve gymnasts have been selected to represent India in the 33rd Tulit Peter Memorial Cup to be held at Kiskunhalas in Hungary on December 8-9.
A panel of experts comprising officials from different states and the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) selected seven gymnasts from Uttar Pradesh, two from Bengal and one each from Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Tripura for the junior men’s international meet.
“The experts had selected the team, consisting of two gymnasts for each of the six age groups ranging from 11 to 16 years, for the Hungary tournament,” said Ajit Mondal, the gymnastics coach of the Sports Authority of India. “The panel watched the performance of the players during the 48th Junior National Gymnastics Championship, that concluded in Jalpaiguri today, before finalising the team.”
For the Indian squad, Rahul Chopra has been selected as the coach. Aloke Shukla and A.M. Rana will be the team manager and technical manager respectively. The selected gymnasts will meet in Allahabad on December 1 for a five-day conditioning camp before the Hungary meet, Mondal added.
In the Jalpaiguri meet, the Bengal team secured number two position preceded by Andhra Pradesh both in the men’s and women’s sections. The Bengal squad earned 352.050 and 192.450 points respectively. The Andhra Pradesh team bagged 365.350 and 196.750 points. The Uttar Pradesh team got the third position in the men’s group with 335.950 points, while Maharastra stood third in the women’s group with 185.90 points.
