Four students from University of Texas, US, did their bit to empower youths at five coastal villages of Gopalpur in Ganjam district by offering classes in English, computers, and organising workshops on career development. The team arrived in Odisha on May 26 and completed their tour on July 3. During their stay, they imparted life skills education in young boys and girls of Venkatraipur, Boxipalli, Markandi, Ganga Vihar and Deegipur villages in Rangailunda block. “I could not speak English earlier, but now, I can manage to a fair extent. I am very happy,” said Deena, a student from Deegipur. Some of their other programmes included conducting education awareness campaigns, seminars on career building, workshops on micro-enterprise development, signature campaigns and tailoring training for dropout girls and women.
Prayer for martyrs
Cadets of the 1 Odisha Air Squadron in Bhubaneswar paid tribute to the 20 army personnel, who died in an IAF chopper crash at Gaurikund in Uttarakhand. They lit lamps and observed a two-minute silence. NCC cadets, Scouts and Guides, NSS and Red Cross volunteers of DAV Public School (Unit-VIII) in Bhubaneswar also paid homage to the bravehearts by organising a candlelight rally.
Medical distinction
The Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, Bhubaneswar, added a feather to its cap by receiving accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers. The institute, run by SoA University, is the first medical college and hospital in the eastern region to achieve this distinction. The board’s accreditation is a public recognition of the achievement of accreditation standards by a health care organisation. It is awarded following an independent external peer assessment of that organisation’s level of performance in patient safety and related standards. The accreditation benefits all stakeholders, the patients being the biggest beneficiaries as it points to high quality of care and patient safety, said an institute official.
KISS in Delhi
The Delhi branch of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) will start functioning from this academic session. An MoU to this effect was signed on June 27 between officials of KISS-Bhubaneswar and the ministry of minorities in the presence of Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit. KISS-Delhi will have 1,200 children belonging to scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, minority communities as well as orphans and those belonging to the disadvantaged sections. Dikshit said the school would impart education according to the CBSE syllabus.
Filmmaker’s tips
The third batch of two-year postgraduate diploma in management programme has started classes at the International Management Institute (IMI), Bhubaneswar. The students are from various backgrounds such as engineering, biotechnology and medicine. Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt inaugurated the programme through video-conferencing. He dwelled upon his career and said dedication, team spirit and quick decision-making were the keys to success. Director-general of IMI Pritam Singh addressed the students online and emphasised on the importance of value and ethics in management and its role in the growth of national economy.
