The Mizoram school education department has decided to introduce televised home schooling from Monday to aid the students in their lessons during the lockdown.

An official release on Saturday said the home classes would be telecast daily from Monday to Saturday on DD Mizoram. The first half-an-hour from 3.05pm will be on science and mathematics for class X students, it added.

Home classes will also be held for other students accordingly.

The department has asked students to attend the televised classes at their homes with notebooks and pens.

The department also urged the students to give priority to home schooling as there is the possibility of the lockdown being extended beyond April 14 owing to the rise in Covid-19 cases in the country. It further urged parents to closely monitor their children.

According to the school calendar, the new academic session (2020-21) began on April 1.

The department looks after elementary education (classes I to VIII), secondary education (classes IX and X), higher secondary education (classes XI and XII), adult education, Hindi education and physical education. The department is headed by a director, who is assisted by an additional director, two joint directors and seven deputy directors.

The state government on March 17 temporarily closed all educational institutions as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

According to officials, thousands of students have no access to education owing to the lockdown.

Education minister Lalchhandam had earlier said schools would re-open once normalcy returns. He had also said the class XII exam, which was halted after the lockdown, would resume once the pandemic was contained. Over 4,000 class XII students are yet to appear for exams in three subjects, officials said.
