Srinagar: Militants struck in Srinagar for the third straight day while clashes broke out between stone-throwers and the security forces after Id prayers at many places in the Valley, the violence claiming one life and leaving dozens injured.

There was no respite on the borders, either, with Pakistani shelling killing army jawan Bikas Gurung, 21.

Militants attacked a CRPF road-opening party at Panthachok on the city's outskirts, injuring jawan Danesh Paswal of 29 Batallion. He received a bullet in the abdomen but was stable after an operation.

As tens of thousands joined Id congregations, clashes that broke out after the prayers ratcheted up tensions. Violence racked south Kashmir's principal town, Anantnag, with a young Sheraz Ahmad losing his life and two dozen people suffering injuries.

Local people said the forces had used pellets and tear gas to break up the mob. They said Sheraz received pellet injuries in the head and other vital organs and died of his wounds.

Police, however, said he died after a grenade exploded in his hand, indicating he was going to throw it at the forces.

"Preliminary investigation reveals that a hand grenade exploded, resulting in the death of Sheraz Ahmad of Brakpora from splinter injuries. His right hand got fully damaged. Further details are being ascertained," a police spokesperson said.

Clashes broke out also near Srinagar's Idgah, where thousands had joined the prayers. Police used force to disperse the mob.

Along the Line of Control, rifleman Gurung died in Pakistani shelling in the Nowshera sector of Jammu.

Gurung belonged to Manipur. The army cancelled the customary exchange of sweets on Id because of the jawan's death.
