Jajpur, March 17: After four days of the double murder that took place in Banagaon Natisahi under Sukinda police station limits in the district, police are yet to arrest the accused.

The ghastly murder has triggered palpable tension in the area.

Following a dispute over ancestral property, Ganeswar Mahanta (33) had stabbed his widow aunt Kanchan Mahanta (38) and her father Dukhabandhu Mahanta (62) to death on Monday.

According to police, the dispute over partition of property deepened between Kanchan and Ganeswar after the demise of the former’s husband.

The local police had once made an effort to resolve the dispute through amicable settlements.

The failure of police in arresting the accused has enraged the villagers. “We provided to the police all clues on the crime and about the accused. But, they have failed to arrest the culprit so far,” said Rabindra Mohanta, a villager.

The angry villagers have threatened to take to the streets if police fail to arrest the accused soon.

“If police fail to make any arrest soon, we will be forced to take to the street,” said Kandara Mahanta, another villager.

“The accused could not be booked because he is absconding. Efforts are on to nab him soon. We are conducting raids in various places to bring the culprit to the book,” said B. N. Bhoi, the investigating officer.
