Bhubaneswar, May 17: Residents of Kharavela Nagar and Rasulgarh will now get fish at government-stipulated affordable price in their locality as two Chilika Fresh shops are set to come up at these places.

The fisheries and animal resource department is about to complete work on these two Chilika Fresh shops.

The first Chilika Fresh shop was set up at Siripur in 2014. After that, two more shops came up at Nayapalli and Saheed Nagar in the following years. With the two new shops at Kharavela Nagar and Rasulgarh, Bhubaneswar will now have five such fish shops.

"The new shops will be inaugurated within a month. People can get fresh fish, crab, prawn, shrimp and other related products at reasonable price from the shops. The shops also plan to start selling dry fish, canned fish and fish pickle very soon. The shops have been set up in such locations so that they will not only cater to the people of Rasulgarh and Kharavela Nagar, but adjoining areas as well," said an official of fisheries and animal resource department.

Earlier this month, the fisheries and animal resource department had announced the opening of 100 such outlets in various parts of the state within six months.

"The shops are not only catering to the need of the consumers, but are also benefiting poor fishermen," said the official.

Fishfed, an apex body of all primary fishermen's cooperative societies in the state, is the brain behind Chilika Fresh. There are 333 societies comprising 70,000 fishermen under Fishfed.

"We have provided all-round support to the fisheries department for setting up the shops. We plan to open more such outlets in joint collaboration and are at present looking for sites to set up shops at Jayadev Vihar, Unit-9, Pokha-riput and other areas," said mayor Ananta Narayan Jena.

"Chilika Fresh provides a range of fish at a very reasonable price. The shops are also very clean and fish are kept there in an hygienic environment," said Bidyadhar Mohanty, a resident of Siripur.

Rasulgarh and Kharavela Nagar residents can't wait to go visit the shops and buy fish from there. "I hope the shop opens soon," said Rasulgarh resident Tutu Baliarsingh.
