Jajpur: A transgender came to the rescue of a pregnant woman, who was beaten up with a crow bar and left lying in blood outside her hut at Padmapur Sahi in the Vyas Nagar Municipality areas on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old woman, who is three months pregnant, was beaten up by her husband Basanta Hermbrum, 28, following an altercation between the duo.

The victim, identified as Kuni Hembrum, has suffered grievous injuries on various parts of her body and is admitted at Area Hospital at Jajpur Road. Her condition is stated to be critical, hospital sources said. The accused husband has fled the scene soon after the crime, police said.

The police said Basanta, who worked as a daily labour and resided in a hut, returned home late on Tuesday night in an inebriated condition. He asked her wife to serve dinner, following which an altercation erupted between the duo.

"The incident took place around 11pm when Basanta returned home and asked her wife to serve dinner. Kuni refused to serve him food as he was in an inebriated condition. Basanta had a heated argument with his wife in their hut. In a fit of rage, Basanta brought a crow bar and beat Kuni brutally," said Jajpur Road police station inspector-in-charge Amitav Mohapatra.

The police said Kuni suffered serious injuries following the attack and came out of the hut screaming for help. "The grievously injured woman was lying on the road bleeding in front of her hut and begging for help. But instead of helping her, the neighbours stood there as mute spectators," he said.

Kuni was left there profusely bleeding for about half an hour before a passer-by arrived and informed the local transgender association.

"I came to the spot after being informed by a local. She was lying on the road - profusely bleeding and screaming for help. I called an ambulance and took her to hospital along with my colleagues," said Jajpur district transgender association president Kajal.

"The accused has fled from the scene soon after the crime. We are on the job and will arrest him shortly," police said.
