
Bhubaneswar, May 20: Altogether 56 students today received their degrees at the annual convocation of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
Thirty got their bachelor degrees in design and 26 students received their master degrees in fashion management.
Students of textile design put up a show titled 'Tantu' on the occasion for the dignitaries. Select graduation project reports were also presented by the fashion management students.
Within a short span of five years (established in 2010), the fashion education institute has already established itself as a cradle for designers, managers and innovators who want to make a mark in the fashion industry.
The institute has placed all its previous batches successfully, while some students have chosen to be entrepreneurs and started off with their own ventures.
Among those who received their design degree certificates, many are already employed with various firms such as Encode Fabric, Biba, And Designs and Triveni Sarees.
The postgraduate students have already bagged lucrative positions with corporate houses such as Madura Garments, Landmark Group, Snapdeal.com, Arvind Textiles, Future Group and Reliance Industries Ltd.
"Blending academics with industrial best practices while retaining a creative edge has been a challenge in the path of the rapidly growing fashion industry in our country. NIFT is a government venture meant to address this need for well-informed and innovative designers and managers, who are also attuned to the needs of the global market," said K. C. S. Ray, director of NIFT.
Though there is a 20 per cent reservation for students from the home state according to the govenrment rule, NIFT Bhubaneswar also has a sizeable number of children from across the country.
Secretary of Ministry of textiles, Sanjay Kumar Panda, who was present as the chief guest, gave away the degrees.
The list of dignitaries included director of Paragon Apparel Pvt. Ltd, Roshan Baid and the country head of Nike Sourcing for India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, Atul Ujagar.
