Bhubaneswar, Oct. 23: The 24th annual conference of the Indian Society of Organ Transplant (ISOT) 2013 will be held in the city from October 25 to 27.
Several neurologist, surgeons, immunogenetists, cardiologists, hematologists, transplant co-ordinators and others will attend the conference on organ transplantation held for the first time in Odisha.
The conference will deliberate on the demand for organ transplantation as well as inadequacy of organs and medical professionals in the field. It will also discuss technical, immunological and other complex issues — social, ethical and legal — besides issue of organ harvesting in brain dead ICU patients.
Neurologists from USA, UK and Australia will also take part in the programme. “Approximately 1.5 lakh patients in India need immediate dialysis followed by transplantation. Another 10 lakh patients are in various stages of chronic kidney disease. They will eventually develop terminal kidney failure and, therefore, need dialysis and transplantation, said S.C. Dash, director of the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences that will host the event.
