Bhubaneswar/Cuttack, Jan. 26: The Republic Day was celebrated across Odisha today with patriotic fervour despite Maoist threat to boycott the occasion.

The rebels had torched construction equipment and vehicles at Dhaliakuji in the Muniguda police limits in Rayagada district late last night. Five Maoist posters were also spotted at Kalyansinghpur in the same district urging people to boycott the R-Day celebrations.

"Security forces were on alert to thwart any violence," said director-general of police K.B. Singh.

Several programmes were held to mark the day.

Odisha governor S.C. Jamir unfurled the Tricolour at Mahatma Gandhi Marg near the Assembly during the state-level parade in Bhubaneswar. In the afternoon, Jamir hosted an "at home" party at Raj Bhavan, which was attended by the Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik, some of his ministerial colleagues and eminent personalities from various walks of life.

The chief minister, while hoisting the national flag in Cuttack, said his government was preparing a vision document Odisha@100.

"Odisha will celebrate 100th year of its formation in 2036 and ensuring overall development is our priority. The work for Odisha@100 vision document will start from this year," Naveen said.

"This is a year of new hope as Odisha will celebrate 80 glorious years of its formation of a separate state," he said.

Swabhiman Samavesh will be organised in every nook and corner of the state to create awareness among people about Odia language, culture and tradition.

Noting that Odisha had carved an identity and emerged as a model state in the field of social security, Naveen said the government was working with commitment and dedication to successfully implement the National Food Security Act.

He said Odisha was witnessing a transition phase and already there had been a substantial improvement in the human development indicator. Be it education, health or education there has been a massive change, said the chief minister.

Stating that developing entrepreneurship skills among the youth is also one of the priorities of the government, Naveen said his government was going to implement a start-up policy to encourage youths. This new policy would create employment opportunities in various sectors.

He said that though 2015 was a difficult year for the farmers' community (more than 100 farmers committed suicide in the wake of crop failure), there would be good rabi crop harvest in Odisha.

"Food security has always been a priority for us and the government is trying its best to implement the National Food Security Act," he said.

In Bhubaneswar, a colourful march past was held, in which CRPF personnel, state armed police force, various school and college students took part.

Besides, seven tableaux were put up on display. Jamir gave away cups, shields and medals to the winners of various competitions.

Four-layered security arrangements were put in place in Bhubaneswar to thwart any untoward incident.
