Rape victim ends life

An alleged gang-rape victim on Wednesday hung herself near her home at Sasan. The 15-year-old Class-IX student took the step when she was alone in the house.

Sambalpur: An alleged gang-rape victim on Wednesday hung herself near her home at Sasan. The 15-year-old Class-IX student took the step when she was alone in the house.

Sources in the family said she took the "extreme step" after being unable to bear the mental stress and social stigma. Women from the neighbourhood came to the house after smelling something burning and found the girl hanging. The immediately called police and informed her parents.

The police said the girl's father had gone to the market as usual. In the evening, the victim's mother told her to prepare food and went to the weekly market with her elder daughter to buy rations.

On May 2, two persons on a motorcycle abducted the girl when she was returning from the market to the school compound and raped her.

She was allegedly raped by six persons in four different locations that night.

She returned home the next day and narrated the incident to her parents, who took her to the hospital for treatment. The doctors at the hospital informed Sasan police after which a case was filed. The cops had also arrested all the six accused involved, including a minor.

The police had completed investigations and filed the charge sheet within 15 days and took the initiative for trial in a fast track court, DIG (northern range), Sambalpur, Satyabrata Bhoi said while briefing reporters on May 21.
