Police bust liquor factory

Balangir, Aug. 10: While conducting raid at a roadside motel on NH-57 in the Balangir- Sonepur stretch yesterday, the Balangir police stumbled upon a spurious liquor factory at the house of a dhaba owner in Sudpada here.

Police arrested dhaba owner Narayan Sahu and have registered a case against him while his son Krupasindhu, who is believed to be the main accused, has gone absconding.

Sources said the police had conducted the raid after getting several complaints about foreign liquor being illegally sold in the said dhaba. During the raid, the police became suspicious when they found some spurious liquor.

On investigating further, they found a manufacturing unit of foreign liquor in the house. There were foreign liquor bottles, logos, stickers and jars containing liquor all around the house. The cops even found materials used to prepare liquor.

Inspector in-charge of Balangir Sadar police station Srimanta Barik said: “When we raided house of the dhaba owner we found a large number of bottles, logos and stickers belonging to famous companies. There were also jars which contained liquor prepared in the house. The liquor prepared in the house are filled in the bottles and sold in his dhaba.”

Barik further informed that the logos and stickers are found to be of the state liquor corporation. Accused Narayan Sahu said that he along with his son opened the dhaba at Banharpali on the Balangir- Sonepur road about three months ago.

“I used to do my duty in the counter of the dhaba while my son Kripasindhu used to bring the liquor. I have no idea about from where he used to bring it,” Sahu said.

Police have registered a case under sections 272, 273, 420, 486, 34 of IPC along with section 47 (A) and 52 (A) of the Bihar-Orissa Excise act, Section 63 of the Copyright Act and Section 78 of the Commerce Act. The accused was remanded in judicial custody after his bail was rejected in a Balangir court today.
