Bhubaneswar, Dec. 5: A 17-year-old girl today threatened to immolate herself during the ongoing Assembly session alleging police inaction in arresting the managing director of her institute against whom she has filed a complaint of molestation.

The complainant, a Plus Two second-year science student of a private junior college in Pattamundai of Kendrapara district, alleged that though she had lodged an FIR at Pattamundai police station on November 20, the cops are yet to take any action.

“The managing director of the college has been harassing me for long. When I informed the matter to my parents, he expelled me from the hostel. On November 11, he called me to his room, molested me and threatened to upload my photographs in the Internet,” she alleged.

The father of the girl alleged that the accused had been threatening his family of dire consequences.

“My daughter is not feeling safe. A voluntary organisation has brought to Bhubaneswar,” said the girl’s father, who works in Secunderabad.

The family of the girl has also appealed to the State Commission for Women and the chief minister’s grievance cell to arrest the accused.

The Pattamundai police have registered a case under sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 354 (outraging modesty), 294 (use of obscene language), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code in this connection.

“He has threatened me to ruin my carrier. This is my second year in the college and I am not being able to continue my studies. My life has become miserable. If the police fail to arrest him, I would be forced to immolate myself during this Assembly session,” threatened the girl.

However, the police said the matter was under investigation.

“We have been conducting frequent raids to nab the accused. But, he is yet to be traced,” said inspector in charge of Pattamundai police station Amitav Mohapatra.

Various women’s rights activists in Bhubaneswar have also threatened to launch an agitation with the girl demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
