Bhubaneswar: Sunil Meher, a notorious sex-racket kingpin and mastermind behind the flesh trade in the city, was on Thursday arrested from Calcutta after running from police for nearly nine months. The 33-year-old was arrested from Calcutta airport after he landed from Ahmedabad.
Police commissioner Y.B. Khurania said Meher was nabbed just after he came out of the airport. “We had information of Meher coming to Calcutta. Based on the information, our team was sent to Calcutta to nab him,” said Khurania.
Ex-CM ill
Sambalpur: Former Odisha chief minister Hemananda Biswal was admitted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences on Thursday. Biswal complained of chest pain in his native village in Jharsuguda district late on Wednesday. Subsequently, he was rushed to the hospital. He is suffering from cardiac problem.
Judge dead
Cuttack: Justice Bhabani Shankar Ray, 61, sitting judge of Orissa High Court, passed away on Thursday evening while undergoing treatment at a private hospital following a massive heart attack.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Justice Ray was the judge of Orissa High Court from November 7, 2007 to October 27, 2010 and then judge of Kerala High Court following transfer till he rejoined as judge of Orissa High Court on March 19, 2014. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik, Union minister of state Dharmendra Pradhan and others expressed their condolence.
Cops injured
Bhubaneswar: A lady assistant sub-inspector and three Odisha Armed Police Force personnel were injured after they were attacked by a group of people at Kalarasahi village in Nabarangpur district. A team of Umerkote police, led by Jyoshnarani Behera, had gone to the village on Wednesday night for an excise raid.
