Burn victim may be shifted to New Delhi

Bhubaneswar: The 15-year-old rape victim from Mahakalapada, who is undergoing treatment for severe burn injuries in Cuttack, may be shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi if her parents approved the idea. The Dalit girl, who was raped and then set afire by two men, is now undergoing treatment in the central burn ward of SCB Medical College and Hospital. The main accused has been nabbed, while cops are on a manhunt for the other one. The district unit of Congress on Wednesday staged a demonstration outside the city police headquarters against rise in crimes against women and Dalits.

bhubaneswar: Governor S.C. Jamir appointed Gangadhar Panda as the new vice-chancellor of Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalay in Puri. Panda, who hails from Cuttack, is at present a professor at Sampurnananda University in Benaras. He was also a deputy advisor on Sanskrit to the Union human resources development ministry.

Student dead

Bhubaneswar: A Class-VIII student of Desouza School, Rourkela, died after a school pick-up van ran over him. Samir Mallick was on his way to school on his cycle. He was declared brought dead at Ispat General Hospital. The driver of the vehicle surrendered and vehicle was seized.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha cricketer Basant Mohanty been included in the India-A squad for long-format matches against the touring New Zealand-A team. The 26-year-old from Cuttack is an all-rounder, who made his first-class debut against Bengal in 2007.

Strike

Dhenkanal: The town observed a daylong bandh called by Enzen Hatao Working Committee on Wednesday. The protesters are demanding withdrawal of the Bangalore-based Enzen Global Solutions from billing and collection of power dues from consumers. Traffic was disrupted for hours as the agitators blocked the NH-55. The Puri-Talcher passenger train was cancelled and some others were delayed because of the agitation.

BHUBANESWAR: The Centre has approved state government's proposal for construction of 343 roads, covering 1,184km, at a cost of Rs 584 crore and 140 long-span bridges worth Rs 483 crore in rural areas under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. This was notified by Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday.

BHUBANESWAR: Chandrasekharpur police on Wednesday arrested the managing director of a real estate company for allegedly duping a land buyer. The police said Rabi Narayan Senapati of Sainath Infotech Real Estate Developer has taken many lakhs from a person promising to give him a patch of land at Chandaka. But Senapati allegedly did not give him the land or return the money. A cheque given to the victim by him also bounced.
