Protest after girl dies in accident

Angul: Tension erupted in the town on Thursday following the death of a 20-year-old girl in an accident. A mob set fire to the bus that hit the girl and blocked NH-55 in protest. ccording to eyewitnesses, two young girls Puja Dey and Puja Baisak were going on a Scooty on Thursday morning, when a bus hit them near Harimouri Chhak. Dey died on the spot, while Basak was rushed to the district headquarters hospital.he mishap triggered tension in the town as the enraged residents burnt the bus. They also sat on the NH-55 at Manguli Chhak near Cuttack blocking the traffic for two hours. The blockade was later lifted by cops.

Elephants

Berhampur: Inspector general of forests for the Centre’s Project Elephant A.M. Singh on Thursday recorded statements of some railway and forest officials in connection with the death of six wild elephants after they were hit by the speeding Howrah-Chennai Coromandel Express near Subalaya Railway level crossing between Rambha and Humma station in Ganjam about 40km from here on December 29 night.

Exam centres

BHUBANESWAR: The Council of Higher Secondary Education will set up 1,069 exam centres, four more than last year, for the upcoming Plus Two exams. Nearly 2.7 lakh students from 1,295 colleges across the state will appear for the exams beginning March 1 for arts, science, commerce and vocational education streams. The council is planning a double lock system to keep exam materials secure.

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik has sanctioned 144 new posts for police sub-inspectors, which would be filled up through state staff selection commission. aveen has also approved the proposal for creating 208 posts in the state forensic science laboratory. This includes 48 posts each for scientific officers and lab assistants, 29 for lab attendants and others.

Angul mishap

Cuttack: Orissa High Court on Thursday sought a clarification from the state government on the death of two children at an anganwadi centre in Tentulihata primary school, Angul, four months ago in a freak accident. The duo drowned in a rainwater-filled pit dug near their anganwadi centre. The court sought clarification on a petition seeking compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each child.

Charge sheet

BHUBANESWAR: Vigilance sleuths on Thursday filed a charge sheet against a senior clerk of the additional district medical officer, Dhenkanal, on bribery charges. Bata Krushna Sahu had allegedly offered a bribe of Rs 5,000 to a chartered accountant of the health department to audit the accounts of the State Malaria Control Society without making adverse comments in the report. Sahu was convicted and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for one year besides being fined Rs 1,000.

BHUBANESWAR: Kharavela Nagar police on Thursday arrested a person involved in robbing a MLA’s house in October last year. The accused Sanjay Saha, 30, of Bihar, who was residing in Capital police station area, was sent to jail following the rejection of his bail pleas by a local court.
