Balasore, Oct. 27: The second spell of floods since cyclone Phailin struck on October 12 is ravaging the district.
Subarnarekha, the major river of the region, is today flowing above the danger level. Jaleswar, Bhograi, Baliapal and Basta blocks in the north of the district are on alert. Jalka, another river, has been flowing over the danger level for past three days posing threat to Basta.
Water level in the Subarnarekha rose following heavy rain in the upper catchment areas and subsequent release of excess water from up-stream Chandeli dam of Jharkhand.
Revenue divisional commissioner Arvind Padhee, who is camping here, today said: “We are co-ordinating with the irrigation department and the various dam authorities to release water in a regulated way.”
District collector B. Parameswaran said: “The rise of river Subarnarekha is a matter of concern. We are keeping close watch on the situation.”
The receding trend of river Budhabalanga is the only source of solace for both the flood victims and the district administration.
However, several low-lying areas in Sadar block are under water.
