Bhubaneswar: The sports and youth services department has finalised a blueprint for the Kalinga International Sports City that will have world-class infrastructure to enable it to host sporting events in the future.

The sports city will come up over a 100-acre land near Infovalley, about 15km from the heart of the city. The project nod was given after a recent review meeting.

"The location is now finalised. We will now invite proposals from expert firms to prepare a master plan for the project. It will be the first of its kind sports city in India. Our officials have started preparing the proposal and it will be floated shortly," said a department official.

With the international sports city, the government plans to organise different kinds of national and international sports event here in the future. "The sports city will not be confined to any one sport. It will host a wide range of sports events, including cricket," said the official.

Bhubaneswar hosted the Asian Athletics Championship and the Men's Hockey World League among major and minor events last year. It will host the Men's Hockey World Cup in November.

Officials have also finalised the locations for the four satellite stadiums planned alongside the sports city in Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela. Local administrations of these places have identified the locations that have got the nod from the government.

In Cuttack, the satellite stadium will be set up over 18.65 acres at Naranpur near Barang, while it will come up over 16.5 acres at Aruapali near Kanisi in Berhampur. However, in Sambalpur and Rourkela, the existing VSS Stadium and Birsa Munda Stadium respectively will be upgraded.
