Cuttack, Dec. 5: Unable to get timely medical attention, a woman allegedly died due to negligence on part of the authorities of Shriram Chandra Bhanja (S.C.B.) Medical College and Hospital here.

The deceased has been identified as Jyotsna Rani Mohanty (50) of Sutahat area. Mohanty, who had sustained severe burn injuries, was brought to the hospital by Choudhry Bazar police patrolling van around 10:30 am on Friday.

Unable to get admitted to the casualty ward, the woman was left in front of the OPD ward. The woman was allegedly lying unattended on the sewerage tank near the OPD ward for five to six hours. Though a number of people including hospital staff saw the plight of the woman, nobody came forward to seek medical attention for the patient.

Only after the intervention of the members of an NGO, the woman was rushed to the casualty ward around 3.30pm. However, she breathed her last around 1.05 am yesterday. It is alleged that that woman died as she did not receive medical attention on time.

The role of the staff in providing timely and quality treatment at one of the major state-run hospital has now come under scanner following the incident.

Despite several attempts, Dhirendra Nath Moharana, the superintendent of the medical college could not be contacted on the issue.

Destitute management officer of the hospital B.N. Moharana said: “There is no question of negligence as all possible assistance was provided to the patient the moment she arrived.”

According to Moharana, the woman sustained 80 percent burn injuries and was in very serious condition. As soon as she was admitted to the casualty ward, she was given primary treatment and was kept under observation.
